Reliquary for Coming Home Camp
Reliquary for Coming Home Camp
acrylic paint on papier-mâché and basswood with magic lantern slide
11.5” x 5.5” x 4”
2016

In August 2014, I spent time at Blueberry View Artist’s Retreat in Benton Harbor, Michigan. While there, I received a magic lantern slide as a gift from artist Janet Sullivan. The image on the glass shows several men in uniform sitting amidst bookshelves. The few women in the photo wear clothing of another era. There is an unidentified cylindrical structure in the room. I know nothing about this image other than it originating from a lot of magic lantern slides marked only as, ‘Coming Home Camp.’ This piece is an experiment in utilizing the glass slide format, requiring a stronger basswood armature. On the exterior, tall cypress trees point skyward to a water tower marked with the text, “Coming Home” in script.
